How HVAC Works
What Is a BTU?
British Thermal Unit — the base unit of heating/cooling capacity. One BTU is the energy needed to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit; HVAC systems are typically sized in tens of thousands of BTUs per hour.
This definition is pending sign-off from a licensed HVAC reviewer.
Why It Matters to You
The BTU rating of your AC or furnace determines whether it can actually keep up with your home's size — too few BTUs and the system runs constantly without catching up; too many and it short-cycles.
Practical Guidance
Don't judge a system by BTUs alone — the right BTU capacity for your home comes from a real load calculation (see Manual J), not a generic square-footage rule of thumb.
