What Is a MERV Rating?

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, 1-20 — how finely an air filter traps particles. Higher isn't automatically better: too high a MERV rating can restrict airflow on a system not designed for it.

This definition is pending sign-off from a licensed HVAC reviewer.

Why It Matters to You

A filter rated higher than your system supports can choke airflow, freeze the coil, or strain the blower — matching MERV to your specific equipment matters more than chasing the highest number available.

Practical Guidance

Check your system's manual or ask during a service visit for the maximum MERV rating it's rated for before upgrading to a denser filter for allergy relief.

MERV Rating Tiers

Tier MERV Range Typical Use
Standard 1-4 Minimal filtration — protects equipment, not air quality
Residential 8-13 Most common tier for home HVAC systems
High-efficiency 14-16 Only on systems rated for the added airflow resistance
