Do I Actually Need My Ducts Cleaned?
Duct cleaning is worth doing when there's visible dust or debris inside the ducts, following a major renovation that generated construction dust, or after confirming a pest or rodent issue in the ductwork — it isn't a routine item every home needs on a fixed schedule the way filter changes are.
When Duct Cleaning Helps
• Visible dust or debris buildup when looking into a supply or return vent
• Recent renovation or construction work that introduced drywall dust or debris into the system
• Confirmed rodent or pest activity in the ductwork
• A musty odor specifically traced to the ducts rather than humidity elsewhere in the home
When It's Not Necessary
A home without any of the above signs generally doesn't need duct cleaning on a routine basis — regular filter changes and normal HVAC maintenance handle the dust load a typical system generates on its own. Cleaning ducts that don't need it doesn't meaningfully improve air quality.
How This Differs From Duct Sealing
Cleaning removes debris already inside the ducts; it doesn't address leaks, gaps, or disconnected sections — a separate issue covered in duct sealing vs. replacement. A dusty duct system can also have leaks, but one doesn't imply the other.
How to Know for Sure
